I work as a consulting economist for Covec, based in Auckland, New Zealand. My main areas of expertise and experience are:

  • Internet, network, regulatory, and telecommunications economics
  • The economics of two-sided platforms and markets
  • Innovation and intellectual property economics
  • Industrial organisation and competition

As you might have seen from my blog, I’m very interested in Internet-related businesses and markets and I follow these industries closely. I’ve written a pricing guide for web services, an overview of pricing principles in two-sided markets (pdf), and a guide to the literature on two-sided markets which may be useful for Internet businesses. I also teach a university course about Internet economics.

I am also skilled at:

  • Numerical simulation modelling and programming in Matlab, R, and other packages
  • Quantitative modelling and macro programming in Excel
  • Data analysis and time-series forecasting
  • Interactive website design and development

Past consulting projects I have worked on include:

  • Advising Vodafone New Zealand on regulatory, competition and cost-modelling issues
  • Developing the official New Zealand tourism forecasts for the Ministry of Tourism
  • Advising the New Zealand Commerce Commission on local loop unbundling and price benchmarking of unbundled services
  • Developing an automated macroeconomic forecasting website using time series models, in conjunction with econometrician Peter Phillips

Although I’m located in New Zealand, I’m happy to work with clients from anywhere in the world. In fact, my location means that the rates I charge are very good value. If you’re interested, please contact me to discuss further.
